Private by design

Loading your file, decoding it, drawing the waveform, moving the selection and auditioning it all happen inside your browser using the Web Audio API. Those steps never touch the network, and you can check: open the network panel, drag the handles, and nothing is requested. That makes this an audio cutter online where the editing genuinely is local. Exporting is the one step that leaves your device, because producing a real MP3 or FLAC needs an encoder. The file then travels over an encrypted HTTPS connection, is converted in an isolated temporary directory, streamed back, and deleted once the download completes. No copies are kept, contents are never inspected, and files are never shared.

Millisecond precision, and clean edit points

Start and end times use decimal precision rather than whole seconds, so you can place a boundary between two syllables or immediately after a drum hit. Any MP3 cut that lands somewhere other than true silence creates a discontinuity your ears hear as a click, which is what the fade toggles are for: they apply a short ramp at each boundary so the clip starts and ends cleanly. Use them for music; for speech they are usually unnecessary if the cut sits in a natural pause.

An audio cutter that works on phones too

Choosing an export format

You can save as MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC or M4R. The right choice depends on what the file is for, and the differences are more practical than technical.

  • MP3 — the safe default. Lossy, compact, and playable on effectively every device, browser, car stereo and messaging app ever made. Choose this unless you have a specific reason not to.
  • WAV — uncompressed and lossless, so quality is identical to the source, but files run roughly ten times larger than an equivalent MP3. Use it when the clip is going into another editor for further work.
  • FLAC — lossless like WAV but compressed, typically around half the size at no quality cost. Ideal for archiving a master copy. Support is good but not universal, so check your target device.
  • AAC — a more modern lossy codec than MP3, generally sounding better at the same bitrate. The natural pick inside the Apple ecosystem and for video work.
  • OGG — an open, royalty-free lossy format that performs well at low bitrates. Common in games and on Linux, less so on consumer hardware.
  • M4R — an AAC file in an MP4 container with the extension iOS looks for. This is the one to pick for an iPhone ringtone.
Converting between lossy formats always costs a little quality, because the file has to be decoded and re-encoded. If you have a lossless original, cut from that rather than from an MP3 you exported earlier.

Making an iPhone ringtone

iOS has two requirements that catch people out. The file must use the .m4r extension, and it cannot run longer than 40 seconds — choose a longer region and it will simply be trimmed to fit. Select your section, set the output format to M4R, and export. Switching both fades on is worth it here, because a ringtone that opens with a click is far more noticeable than a clip that does.

Getting the finished file onto the phone is the part no browser tool can do for you: transfer it with Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows, then select it under Settings, Sounds and Haptics. Can I trim the same file multiple times?

Yes, with no limit on how often. After exporting, upload the file again to take a different section. If you plan several clips from one recording, cut each from the original rather than from a previous export — re-encoding a lossy file repeatedly compounds quality loss.
